The northern Plains Indians had three types of buffalo hides they painted: abstract geometric designs painted by women, exploit robes painted by men who performed brave deeds, and winter counts painted by men. While tepees and shields bore more spiritual symbols, the exploit robes depicted heroic deeds. The paint used to adorn the buffalo robes was usually made from pigments found in nature: berries, lichen and moss, vegetable matter, and soil. This dignified brave wore his robe proudly, reflecting on his moment of glory.

"The Moccasin Trade"
Oil      36" X 54"

SOLD

 Insight Gallery
Fredericksburg, TX

“ It was commonplace among the early settlers heading west, to trade with the Sioux and Cheyenne before hostilities started. As families often walked long distances while having their wagons haul their belongings, the leather boots and shoes they wore became increasingly uncomfortable. A common barter was to trade cloth, blankets, and metal goods with the tribes for comfortable moccasins made from deer and elk skins as seen here. “

“Capt. Varnum's Scouts“
Oil          30" x 40"

Capt. Charles Varnum, a graduate of West Point, was the commander of Crow and Arikaree scouts for the 7th Cavalry based at Ft. Lincoln. He was involved in several expeditions including the Yellowstone Expedition, the Black Hills Expedition, and the Sioux Wars where he and his scouts reported a huge Indian village near the Little Bighorn River. After reporting to Custer, his advice was ignored and Custer decided to attack resulting in the terrible defeat. Varnum accompanied Marcus Reno and Frederick Benteen, and survived the battle. He continued with the 7th Cavalry and was awarded the Army Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry in 1897. He was the last surviving officer of the Battle of the Little Bighorn when he died in 1936 at the age of 86.
